The Top 5 Social Media Moments of the Week đ
This week on social media was wild + Nick Kyrgios broke the rules.
Welcome to Athletic Interest.Â
In this weekâs newsletter, we are going to take you through the most interesting, and bizarre sports-related moments from the past week. Of course, we start with Nick Kyrgios but keep reading to learn why Harry Maguire needs media training and how a small Italian football club won Twitter.
Last week, we did promise more controversy from Nick Kyrgios and the Australian has not disappointed.
Before his match against Brandon Nakashima, Kyrgios walked onto Centre Court wearing red Air Jordan sneakers. While he did remove them to play, he changed back into them after completing a five-set win and added a red cap for good measure.
Those of you that have watched our video on Wimbledonâs strict âwhite onlyâ rule will understand why Kyrgios is in trouble.Â
Wimbledon rules state only white must be worn 'from the point at which the player enters the court surround'. The only exception is a small 1cm strip of colour on the edge of some clothing.
A red cap and red shoes are clear violations of these strict rules. While Kyrgios will have been expecting to receive a punishment for his clothing choices, he doesnât appear to have any regrets.
'I do what I want. I'm not above the rules, I just like wearing my Jordans,â explained the Wimbledon finalist.Â
'It's more attention for me. What's that saying? Any publicity is good publicity, right?.â
Wimbledonâs all-white rule has come under increased scrutiny at this yearâs tournament. Some love the traditional aspect of wearing white each year, while many female players have raised concerns that all-white clothing can be problematic when on a period.
Kyrgios has also come out against the rules on a number of occasions, including this year when he claimed that âWimbledon doesnât really care what looks cool.â
Whether you agree with the actions of Nick Kyrgios or not, you cannot argue with his tennis ability. Kyrgios will now face one of Cameron Norrie or Novak Djokovic in the final. Whether he will abide by the rules for the biggest match of his career remains to be seen.Â
Top 5 Social Media Moments đ
This week, social media has been absolutely spectacular. From a weird fact about Roger Federer to Harry Maguireâs most embarrassing moment since that time he tackled his teammate. Join us as we take you through the top five greatest social media moments of the week.Â
5ď¸âŁ We start off this list with Harry Maguire. The Manchester United captain was accidentally drawn into the debate around Cristiano Ronaldoâs future after he liked a post claiming that Ronaldo wanted to leave due to an imminent 25% cut in his salary.
While the action of liking the post has infuriated some fans, Maguire claims he liked the post by mistake and was not able to catch the error before fans picked it up.
4ď¸âŁ Next we have Dutch midfielder Marten de Roon who provided the perfect response to his managerâs request to share personal images with his fans.Â
This tweet actually pokes fun at the growing trend of footballers becoming lifestyle influencers. Many want to build a career outside football and use images of their fashion, luxury cars, and holidays to capture the attention of a much larger audience. The footballer can then capitalise on this audience by selling products or even launching their own brands. The king of this approach is Cristiano Ronaldo, who has a team making sure that he posts the right mixture of posts about football, family, lifestyle, and fitness. The fact that de Roon has 110k followers on Twitter compared to Ronaldoâs 110 million, suggests that the lifestyle influencer approach works. That being said, de Roonâs Twitter feed is absolutely brilliant.
đĽ The first step on the podium goes to Bob Golen who tweeted this hilarious fact about Roger Federer:
This tweet quickly went viral and has almost 400k likes and over 30k retweets. Cannot say we are surprised đ
đĽ If you ever wondered just how good Fabrizio Romano is at his job, then this tweet should clear it up for you.
Fabrizio Romano must have such an extensive and reliable network to be able to reveal information about someone that not even their closest relatives are aware of.
The fact that Romano was able to build a career from his ability to gather this information shows how the transfer market has become one of the most in-demand and entertaining aspects of modern football.
đĽ There can only be one winner and this week it is the Italian club Venezia and their hilarious Twitter account.
The Twitter admin started the week by announcing that the club had just joined Tik Tok⌠a move that led to some hilarious back and forth between Venezia and Tik Tok.
While the outcome of the spat is unclear, Veneziaâs Twitter account was back at it soon after, this time taking aim at NFTs.
While footballing success has been limited, the club has found fame in other areas (not only on Twitter.) Recently, Venezia was dubbed the âworldâs most fashionable football clubâ thanks to their recent kit designs that have gone viral on social media.
Now, they can add âAthletic Interestâs favourite social media moment of the weekâ to their impressive list of achievements.
